The Delta Dental Mobile Program provides oral health services to underserved children. The program includes two trucks that serve as mobile clinics to provide preventive, diagnostic and restorative care to kids across the state, and dental hygienists and community health workers based on the state's Native American reservations.
Delta Dental manages, operates and staffs the mobile trucks, and works with local community site partners to identify children most in need of care who can least afford it. Local community sponsors also contribute a modest stipend for the visit. No patient will be denied services due to inability to pay.
The two trucks have visited 82 communities and provided more than $21 million in dental care to 40,000 patients since the program began. Both trucks travel across the state an average of 40 weeks every year. Around 3,000 total kids are served each year on the trucks.
Dental hygienists and community health workers based on South Dakota's Native American reservations have focused on preventive care through education, cleanings, sealants, and flouride treatments, reaching another 4,000 children each year.
