Delta Dental of South Dakota's 2014 initiative is directed towards interventions that can effect significant change in identified oral health issues with the primary goal being disease prevention. Efforts will be made to maximize South Dakota's dental workforce capabilities, to increase access to dental care and to greatly expand oral health education and prevention efforts to both targeted audiences and the general public.

The Foundation is committed to the principle that everyone deserves quality dental care. Consequently, it directs the majority of its resources to those South Dakotans who are underserved. The foundation's focus is on children, but care is also provided to elderly and disabled patients needing orthodontic care through a partnership with the South Dakota Dental Association.

Dakota Smiles Mobile Dental Program

Delta Dental's Dakota Smiles Mobile Dental Program is a statewide mobile dental program that provides oral health services to children from limited-income families via two 40-foot-long trucks: the Ronald McDonald® Care Mobile and the Dakota Smiles Smile Mobile. These modern dental offices on wheels provide both preventive and restorative dental care and oral health education to children who would not otherwise have access to much needed dentistry.

Circle of Smiles Reservation-based Oral Health Prevention Program

The program hopes to improve oral health by significantly increasing the amount of preventive oral health care services and oral health education that is provided on the reservations, primarily in community-based settings, including schools and Head Starts.

The Circle of Smiles staff is excited to provide oral health care and promote healthy smiles across the reservations. Delta Dental of South Dakota anticipates sustaining this effort long term by maintaining the dental hygiene workforce on the reservations through Indian Health Service/Medicaid/private insurance reimbursement.
